About The Wiltshire Ancestral Trail
Greetings relatives distant and close.

This site is in the early stages of construction. Please excuse our dust but
we wanted to make information conveniently available to people as soon as
possible so we are releasing the password on the basis that it is in a very
rough state.

Firstly let me dispel any misconception that this site is concentrated on the
County of Wiltshire. Wiltshire is our family name. However we have not
concentrated on that name but are following up as far as possible all
ancestors and their descendents of Oliver John Marsh our grandchild. The main
ancestral
names are Gibbins, Jukes, Marsh, Mumford, Prosser,
Webber and Wiltshire although other names have of course married into the
tree. Geographically we have found that our researches have been concentrated
in and around Bristol, Wolverhampton, various Dorset villages and
London.

We have taken the decision not to show the names of living people. We know
that this distracts from the initial look of the site and can cause
navigational difficulties but want people to feel safe in providing us with
information. However this has proved to be one of the construction
difficulties as while the site automatically assumes anyone over 100 to be
open it appears to be treating those between 200 and 300 to be living by
default. We are rectifying this as we identify a problem. If you have a query
about a relative in this time range please email us and we will ensure that
the information is made open.

Where information has been obtained from other people's trees we are in the
process of seeing that this is acknowledged in the notes space of the relevant
person. If you spot information that needs an acknowledgement please let us
know. On the other hand if you would prefer not to be named also please alert
us accordingly. Please note that the acknowledgements bypass the automatic
living person over-ride.

Where we have BMD certificates these will be acknowledged in the notes space.
Some but not necessarily all will be posted to the site. If you wish to see a
certificate that is identified but not shown email us and we will feature it
on the site at least temporarily. We would be grateful for any certificates
shared with us.

For those within the relevant age range the censuses for 1851 to 1901 have
been checked and we are currently looking at the 1841 census. Censuses will
not be posted to the site but we are undertaking a rolling programme of
cutting/pasting transcripts of the censuses into the notes spaces.
Unfortunately on pasting corruptions occur - spacings are removed and ?s
appear instead of other symbols. These and any grammatical errors will be
corrected as soon as possible. If it appears we have misidentified a census
or you have traced a census of which we do not appear to be aware please let
us know as soon as possible.

There are several photograph albums but I would particularly draw attention to
the celebrations album. The intention here is in part to show groups of people
where we are seeking identification of some of the attendees. Any help in such
identifications would be gratefully accepted. This of course also applies to
the large groups in the wedding albums. I am sure everyone has gone through
old photograph albums and not had a clue as to the identity of some of the
faces that peer out. We will be featuring some of our mystery relatives in the
identity parade album. No prizes for correct answers merely the satisfaction
of a puzzle solved. We would be delighted to received scans of any relatives
to add to the tree.

Getting Around
There are several ways to browse the family tree. The Family View shows the person you have selected in the center, with his/her photo on the left and notes on the right. Above are the father and mother and below are the children. The Ancestor Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph above and children below. On the right are the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. The Descendant Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph and parents below. On the right are the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Your site can generate various Reports for each name in your family tree. You can select a name from the list on the top-right menu bar.

In addition to the charts and reports you have Photo Albums, the Events list and the Relationships tool. Family photographs are organized in the Photo Index. Each Album's photographs are accompanied by a caption. To enlarge a photograph just click on it. Keep up with the family birthdays and anniversaries in the Events list. Birthdays and Anniversaries of living persons are listed by month. Want to know how you are related to anybody ? Check out the Relationships tool.
